Carpooling Parents Less Vigilant About Booster Seats (LiveScience.com)

While the majority of parents report using booster seats for their 4- to 8-year-old children, booster seat use among children who carpool is inconsistent, a new study suggests.

In a national survey, University of Michigan researchers asked 681 parents about their use of booster seats. Of those, 64 percent reported carpooling with children.

Of the carpooling parents, "we found that they were using booster seats less often for their own children, and they were also less likely to ask another parent to use a booster seat for their child," said study co-author Dr. Michelle Macy, a lecturer in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Michigan.

Parents said they used a booster seat 76 percent of the time when driving their own children in the family car. But of these, only half said their child always uses a booster seat when riding with friends who do not use booster seats.

Further, one in five parents doesn't always ask other parents to use a booster seat for their child, the study showed.

The study is published online today (Jan. 30) in the journal Pediatrics.

States without booster seat laws

Most states have laws requiring booster seats for children, but in the three states without those laws ? Arizona, Florida and South Dakota ? reported use of booster seats was lower, especially as children got older, the researchers found. While 79 percent of parents reported using booster seats for 7- to 8-year olds in states with applicable laws, only 37 percent in states without corresponding laws reported doing so.

For carpooling parents, more than 90 percent reported using booster seats in states with child-restraint laws, while fewer than 50 percent reported using the seats in states without the laws.

National guidelines suggest using booster seats for children under 4 feet 9 inches tall, the height of an average 11-year-old, Macy said. No states specify height as the basis of their laws, she said.

One of the best ways to reduce injuries to children involved in traffic accidents is to make state laws consistent with these national height guidelines, Macy said. "Most of the state laws are set [so parents] use a booster seat until the child is eight," she said. ??

The researchers gathered their data from 12 questions about booster-seat use and carpooling inserted into the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, an ongoing study at the University of Michigan.

Booster seat hassle

For car poolers, one problem is the hassle involved with moving a booster seat from one car to another. Researchers could work with safety-seat or automobile manufacturers "to see if they can come up with some options that would be more portable for families," Macy said.

The study does a good job investigating an important issue, said Dr. Mark Zonfrillo, leader of Child Passenger Safety Research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"It was interesting to see that, although overall use in the family car was high, the rates for car pooling were lower," Zonfrillosaid.

Both Zonfrillo and Macy said a strength of the study was its national sample of parents, but that self-reporting on surveys can sometimes be inaccurate. "We have no real way to verify if the parents do what they say they're doing," Macy said. "They might report ? more safety-seat use than they actually do."

Healthcare workers need to help parents recognize the importance of booster seats for their children's safety, Macy said.

"We've come a long way, and the injuries and deaths have really gone down," Macy said. "[Parents] should really consider the importance of being consistent with the way they're approaching safety with their kids, and not let [booster seats] become a point of conversation or compromise."

Pass it on: While many parents are using booster seats for their 4- to 8-year olds, fewer parents use the seats in carpooling situations. Parents should insist that children use the seats in the family car and in other people's vehicles.

(AP) ? An Iowa woman has given birth to a boy weighing 13 pounds and 13 ounces ? without the aid of surgery.

Asher Stewardson was born Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, measuring 23 ? inches long. Fifteen months ago, his brother, Judah, arrived weighing 12 pounds and an ounce at birth.

Mercy officials say only a tenth of 1 percent of all newborns weigh more than 11 pounds at birth.

The boys' mother, Kendall Stewardson, endured six hours of labor without an epidural injection. She says she and her husband, Joshua, wanted to avoid cesarean delivery because that wouldn't have been good for her or Asher.

Nineteen pets killed in Spotsylvania fire - The News Desk

Nineteen pets died in a Saturday morning fire that destroyed a home in the Lake Wilderness I subdivision of Spotsylvania County.

Spotsylvania Deputy Fire Chief Monty Willaford said 12 cats and seven dogs perished inside the single-family home in the 12900 block of Dubin Drive. Another three cats were rescued, and four more were missing.

The residents of the house were not there when the fire occurred.

A 911 call about the fire came in at 11:16 a.m., Willaford said, and the first firefighters arrived about 10 minutes later. The 1,800-square-foot house was engulfed in flames when crews got there, and the roof soon collapsed. There were no injuries to any humans.

About 30 firefighters and rescuers assisted in the effort, but the fire resulted in a total loss of the house, which was valued at about $200,000, Willaford said. Heat from the blaze caused about $10,000 in damage to the next-door house, mostly to its vinyl siding.

Fire officials investigated the cause of the Saturday blaze throughout the day. Willaford said it is too early to tell if the fire was accidental, or what caused it.

Columbus to host NHL All-Star game in 2013

(AP) ? In a season in which very little has gone right for the Blue Jackets, general manager Scott Howson was able to deliver something positive: Columbus has landed the 2013 NHL All-Star game.

"We haven't had a lot of good news here since the season started. This is really a nice piece of news for us to start building some momentum," Howson said Saturday after attending the NHL Board of Governors meeting during the All-Star festivities in Ottawa.

"It's phenomenal for our market. It's phenomenal for our team," Howson said, noting the event will bring tens of millions of dollars to the city. "The attention it brings to your city, the attention it brings to your team, it just raises your profile. It's a tremendous event."

The Blue Jackets (13-30-6) entered the All-Star break with the NHL's worst record and have already gone through a coaching change after Scott Arniel was fired three weeks ago. And only the Tampa Bay Lightning (165) have allowed more goals this season than Columbus (163).

Commissioner Gary Bettman formally announced the Blue Jackets would host the game.

"We're looking forward to bringing our All-Star celebration to Columbus," Bettman said. "The Blue Jackets did a great job of hosting the NHL Draft in 2007, and I have no doubt they will raise the bar even higher when they welcome our All-Star celebration next January."

In their 11th NHL season, the Blue Jackets, who play in Nationwide Arena, had applied for hosting rights in 2013, 2014 or 2015. Next year's All-Star weekend will be Jan. 26-27 and will mark the third straight year a city has hosted the game for the first time. Raleigh, N.C., home of the Carolina Hurricanes, hosted the game last year and this year's game is Sunday in Ottawa.

"The Blue Jackets are honored to host the 2013 All-Star celebration in Columbus as we believe our city offers a truly unique setting for this special event," said Blue Jackets majority owner John P. McConnell. "As much as it is a showcase for the NHL's best players, it is also a celebration of hockey fans and having it in Columbus is a testament to the fantastic support of our fans and the strength of Central Ohio as a hockey market."

Italy sells top amount at bond sale, yields fall (Reuters)

MILAN (Reuters) ? Italy's borrowing costs dropped sharply as it sold the maximum amount of 5 billion euros at an auction of short-term debt on Thursday, helping drive down yields on its longer-dated bonds ahead of a crucial sale of five- and 10-year paper on Monday.

At the first auction since credit rating agency Standard & Poor's downgraded Italy by two notches, yields on its two-year zero-coupon bonds fell to 3.76 percent - the lowest since August and more than a percentage point less than it paid a month ago.

"The Treasury managed to sell at the top of the range and at a lower yield," said Sergio Capaldi, an analyst at Intesa Sanpaolo in Milan.

"We are returning to (yield levels seen) last summer but we still have a long way to go before the situation normalizes. A year ago yields were below 3 percent."

Italian government bond yields and the cost of insuring its debt against default fell after the auction, with the yield on its benchmark 10-year bond 15 basis points lower on the day at 6.09 percent.

The cost of a five-year credit default swap fell 29 bps to 410 bps, according to prices from Markit.

S&P cut Italy's rating to BBB+ with a negative outlook on January 13, citing rising external financing risks.

Italian bond yields have nevertheless fallen from euro-era highs hit in November as cheap European Central Bank loans have fuelled appetite for its short-term debt among domestic banks.

But longer-dated bonds have rallied less, and Monday's sale of up to 8 billion euros is considered an important test of demand for Italian paper among international investors whose support it will need to meet this year's huge borrowing target.

Uncertainty over the outcome of talks between Greece and its private sector creditors on a debt restructuring it needs to avoid a messy default is complicating efforts by Rome to refinance some 90 billion euros of bonds maturing between February and April.

Monday's auction settles on February 1 when nearly 26 billion euros of BTP bonds and around 10 billion euros of coupon payments fall due.

On Thursday, Italy sold 4.5 billion euros of the new January 2014 CTZ bond. It also sold 500 million euros of an off-the-run September 2014 BTPei last auctioned in 2005.

Citi warned in a note that another two-notch downgrade of Italy expected from rating agency Moody's would mean BTPei bonds are excluded from a major inflation index, which is likely to trigger selling by accounts that automatically replicate the composition of the index.

"However, once this event has passed, and the market has re-priced accordingly ... the index event may create buying opportunities, although these are still likely to be confined to the short-end," Citi analyst Jamie Searle said in the note.

Both zero-coupon and inflation-linked bonds fall outside the scope of purchases carried out by the ECB on the secondary market in a bid to support Italian debt.

On Friday, Italy will also sell 8 billion euros of six-month bills and 3 billion euros of one-off bills maturing at the end of December.

Rome has said it plans to take advantage of stronger demand for shorter-dated debt in the first half of this year but is aware that significantly shortening the average life of its debt from around seven years would undermine a major credit strength - as S&P warned in its rating statement.

Object Lesson in Non-Transparency At Energy.gov

Government-run healthcare is not awesome, but it is arguably necessary.

However, that's a moot point because that's not what the US is going to get. The US had a right-wing party yelling "socialists! Death panels!" at a less-right-wing party which put up self-imposed roadblocks to appease them, even though the latter controlled Congress, Senate and White House (until late 2010), until you got mandatory health insurance.

It is a giant clusterfuck that Republicans are secretly overjoyed to get, because when it collapses they will tout it as an example of why public health systems don't work, even though it's nothing like the public health or mixed public/private systems in other countries that DO work (though again, not awesomely).

They (and much of the American public) also ignore the fact that even before Obamacare, even during the Bush Jr. era, the US was already spending more tax dollars on healthcare per capita than all the other industrialized nations. If they'd only spend those *existing* health care tax dollars properly, the standard of care that the poor and lower-middle class would be AT LEAST as good as Canada's (which has plenty of flaws, don't get me wrong, but it's very unlikely to force people into bankruptcy or taking out a second mortgage), and the wealthier could still pay for better health services.

Embattled health fund director resigns (AP)

DAVOS, Switzerland ? The head of the $22.6 billion Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has abruptly resigned, part of a shakeup in its top management since revelations about corruption and misspending severely rattled some of its biggest donors.

Dr. Michel Kazatchkine, a French clinical immunologist who has served as executive director of the global health fund for the past five years, announced Tuesday that he will resign in March. The shakeup resulted from an internal review to address problems highlighted in Associated Press stories last year.

Following the AP articles about the fund's losses, some donors withheld funding, and the fund scaled back its spending.

Foreign Minister Alain Juppe of France, the fund's second-largest donor after the United States, said in a statement he "deeply regrets" the doctor's resignation and hailed his "remarkable work" over nearly five years.

Last year the fund's board decided to create a new general manager position after the fund was forced to cancel its plans to expand its programs by more than $1 billion when its budget projections dropped.

The panel also found unhealthy friction between Kazatchkine and the fund's internal watchdog, Inspector General John Parsons, who has come under pressure as his team of investigators and auditors documented the losses.

Kazatchkine, in a statement released by the fund, cited as a reason for his unexpected departure the board's decision to create the new position of general manager. He said he concluded he should not continue under these circumstances.

The resignation came on the eve of the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, which played a role in its creation a decade ago. A dinner for the public-private fund is planned Thursday with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and major backers Bill Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

On Feb. 1, Gabriel Jaramillo, a former chairman and CEO of Sovereign Bank, will take over as general manager. The fund described his job as "a newly created position intended to oversee a process of transformation as it accelerates the fight against the three pandemics by focusing on its management of risk and grants."

Jaramillo, a Brazilian citizen who hails from Colombia, has recently served as a special adviser to the U.N. on malaria and was part of the panel that reviewed the Global Fund's operations.

The Geneva-based fund was set up in 2002 as a new way to coordinate world efforts against the diseases and to speed up emergency funds from wealthy nations and donors to the places hardest hit. It currently pays for the treatment of around half the developing world's AIDS sufferers.

Outside of its donor nations and celebrity backers, the biggest private donor is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has pledged $1.15 billion and provided it with $650 million so far.

The fund created the outside panel in March to address concern among donors after Associated Press articles in January 2011 about the loss of tens of millions of dollars in grant money because of mismanagement and alleged fraud.

Germany, the European Commission and Denmark withheld hundreds of millions of euros in funding pending reviews. Germany ? the fund's fourth-largest donor_ has since restored its funding.

Car bombs kill 14, wound 75 in Iraq capital (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? Four car bombs exploded in mainly Shi'ite Muslim areas of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing 14 people and wounding 75, underlining a political crisis that threatens to revive sectarian strife in Iraq.

The first blast hit a group of day laborers gathering for jobs in the poor northeastern Sadr City area of the capital, leaving a chaotic scene of scattered shoes and food, and pools of blood. The bomb killed at least eight people and wounded 24, police and hospital sources said.

"We were all standing waiting to earn our living and all of a sudden it was like a black storm and I felt myself thrown on the ground," said Ahmed Ali, a 40-year-old laborer whose face and hair were burned by the explosion.

"I fainted for a while then I woke up and hurried to one of the cars to take me to the hospital," said Ali, lying on a bed in the emergency room at Imam Ali hospital in Sadr City.

The second blast near a traffic roundabout in Sadr City killed three people and wounded 26 others, the sources said.

Two other car bombs exploded in mainly Shi'ite northwestern areas of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 25, sources said. One car blew up near two schools in the Shula district, the other on a busy commercial street in Hurriya.

Violence in Iraq has dropped sharply from the height of sectarian killing in 2006-7, but insurgents and militias still carry out daily attacks and assassinations in an attempt to undermine the government.

Iraq has been hit by a series of bombings targeting Shi'ites during the worst political crisis in a year, which threatens to break up a fragile coalition government and has raised fears of renewed sectarian violence after U.S. troops left on December 18.

The government of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki moved last month to arrest Sunni Muslim Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi on charges he ran a death squad and then sought to sideline a Sunni deputy prime minister after he branded Maliki a dictator.

Hashemi denied the charges and sought refuge in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region, where he is unlikely to be arrested.

The Sunni-backed Iraqiya political bloc then announced a boycott of parliament and several Iraqiya ministers have stayed away from cabinet meetings in protest. Others have attended, underscoring splits in the alliance.

The turmoil has fuelled fears that Maliki is trying to shore up Shi'ite power and sideline Iraqiya. The political blocs began talks last week to try to organize a national conference to resolve their differences.

A series of bombings in Shi'ite areas of the capital on December 22 killed at least 72 people and wounded 200 others. Scores more were killed in attacks targeting Shi'ite pilgrims this month.

US lauds Egypt's first steps toward democracy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House is congratulating Egypt on achieving "several historic milestones" in its transition to democracy.

The White House issued the statement ahead of Wednesday's first anniversary of the popular uprising that toppled longtime Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak. The White House says that while Egypt still faces many challenges, the country is taking important steps toward fulfilling the promise of its revolution.

Egypt's first democratically elected parliament in 60 years held its first meeting this week. Egypt's military ruler also lifted a state of emergency Tuesday that has lasted for decades.

Protesters are expected to mark this week's anniversary by taking to the streets to call on the military council now leading Egypt to immediately step down. The White House urged Egyptians to commemorate the anniversary peacefully.

Irv Gotti's Def Jam Presidency Bid 'Caused A Buzz'

'Everybody felt what I was saying and was riding,' former Murder Inc. boss says about October 'RapFix Live' appearance.
By Rob Markman

Irv Gotti
Photo: MTV News

No matter if he was producing hits for Jay-Z or J.Lo or running Murder, Inc Records, Irv Gotti always approached the game with passion. Gotti brought that same love to MTV's "RapFix Live" in October when he essentially campaigned to become Def Jam's next president.

"It caused a buzz, and I want people to know I didn't start the whole 'Irv Gotti for president' thing; the people did," the former Def Jam A&R told MTV News as he walked the red carpet at the reopening of Jay-Z's 40/40 Club in Manhattan last week. "It was a crazy thing, and it was all good."

Gotti has a storied relationship with the groundbreaking rap label. After he produced "Can I Live" from Hov's 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, Irv helped set up a deal between Jay's Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam. Next, Gotti coaxed DMX to the powerhouse label and then Ja Rule.

In 2005, the federal government charged Gotti's Murder Inc. label with money laundering, and even though Irv was cleared of the charges, his relationship with Def Jam soured. Back in October, Irv made his pitch to return to the record company in a very big way.

"If you don't want to hire me — the best man for the job, the man who will die for it — cool, I understand. You think I'm Suge Knight, you think the feds may come in here again if you hire me, cool," he said at the time. "Put somebody in there, because you not giving any sign or any indication that you care about my culture."

A number of artists and industry mainstays spoke out in support of Irv, while others quietly championed him behind the scenes. "It was one of the best 'RapFix' [interviews] ever," Jadakiss told MTV News in November. "He said a lot of stuff that doesn't get said. He was able to [vent] without hating on the record labels or channeling any hate. ... Everything he said — me being on the inside looking out and him being on the inside looking out but now on the outside looking in — I think he nailed every point. I think everything he said was excellent, and almost everything was true."

It doesn't seem like Def Jam brass will put Irv in the big chair, but Gotti is appreciative of the support he has gotten from the hip-hop community. "Everybody was riding. It was a lot of love," he said last week. "Everybody felt what I was saying and was riding."

Who do you think should be Def Jam's next president? Tell us in the comments!

Verizon's reportedly trials VoLTE services in two cities, eyes nationwide rollout next year

Verizon's Voice over LTE (VoLTE) platform has been in the works for a while now, and according to industry insiders, it's about ready to hit the big time. Catharine Trebnick, an analyst at Northland Capital Markets, told Light Reading Mobile this week that the service has already launched on a trial basis in two cities, and that Big Red plans to roll it out on a nationwide level in 2013. According to Light Reading Mobile, Trebnick's claims were later corroborated by a second, anonymous source. Verizon, as you may recall, had previously pegged 2012 for the commercial launch of its new platform, and could still achieve that goal with launches in select markets, before going live on a nationwide basis next year, as rumored. The company, however, is playing its cards close to the chest, saying in a statement that it's "continuing to work on VoLTE and the services it brings, and will share any launch or availability plans in due course."

Verizon's reportedly trials VoLTE services in two cities, eyes nationwide rollout next year originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 15:35:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Cults Wrap U.S. Tour With Sold-Out Show

Concert's stunning visuals help create a piece of modern art.

NEW YORKCults ended the brief final leg of their U.S. tour on Thursday night, drawing in a sold-out crowd at New York City's Webster Hall.

The band, led by singer Madeline Follin and guitarist Brian Oblivion, jammed their way through a solid set that brought the crowd from mesmerized silence during the softer, almost trance-driven songs to screaming cheers for Madeline's impressive high notes scattered throughout the fast-paced pop songs.

The matching long-haired duo, who remain the only act on British superstar Lily Allen's record label, In The Name Of, are already known for their edgy music videos. "Abducted" and "Go Outside" have both been lauded by critics, and fans eagerly await their upcoming video for "You Know What I Mean." All three were performed true to the album versions during the 70-minute set.

As the band translated their beautifully pop-heavy and catchy music to a live venue, videos blasted on a multiplex-sized screen behind them throughout the show. Synchronized swimmers, owls, footage from Jonestown and frightening monkey-faced men emerged from a TV static as Madeline's live image juxtaposed throughout the entire set. The show felt more like a piece of modern art than a concert, in that the band not only put on a solid set of infectious music, but were also accompanied by a series of stunning visuals paced to their beat, transforming Webster Hall into a modern art gallery. They even threw in an inspired and seldom-played cover of Leonard Cohen's 1988 classic "Everybody Knows," as well as an encore for the remix of "Bad Things," accompanied by up-and-coming hip-hop star Freddie Gibbs.

Cults head to Australia and Asia in February.

In Bain deals, Romney gave stock to Mormon church (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Using a practice that made him eligible for large tax deductions, Mitt Romney gave the Mormon church substantial stock holdings that he obtained through his private equity firm, according to documents filed with the government and to Romney associates.

The tactic used by Romney to help meet his Mormon obligation of "tithing" - in which members donate 10 percent of their income to the church - is a common way for wealthy Americans to make large donations to charities, tax specialists say.

But against the backdrop of a Republican presidential campaign in which Romney is being pressured to reveal his tax returns and further details on his vast wealth, the donations shed light on the tax strategies of Romney and others at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he co-founded in 1984.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is the early frontrunner in the state-by-state contest to pick a Republican candidate to run against Democrat Barack Obama in the November presidential election.

Filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission indicate that Romney and others at Bain have given "appreciated stock" to the church and various charities, which gives the donors potentially generous tax benefits.

The SEC records, which cover a period from 1997 to 2008, reveal several donations worth millions of dollars of stock in Bain deals to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The records do not say precisely how much was donated by Romney. He left Bain in 1999 but continued to have ties to some of the firm's deals because part of his estimated $270 million fortune is invested in funds linked to Bain.

His staff acknowledges that Romney, who has been active in the Mormon Church, has donated stock from Bain deals to the church but would not say how much.

The SEC filings indicate that donations to the church in stock from Bain deals reached well into the millions of dollars.

They include a gift of nearly $2 million in Burger King stock in February 2007 generated by a Bain deal.

In another donation, the Mormon church received what SEC filings and stock pricing records indicate was $1.3 million of stock in a company called Innophos Holdings in June 2008.

The church received an estimated $1 million in Domino's Pizza stock in 2004, in yet another donation.

Tax analysts said churches and charities who receive such stock donations usually sell them, tax-free, for cash shortly after receiving them. Mormon church officials indicated this was the church's practice.

Tax analysts said the donation method used by Romney and Bain generally worked like this:

Romney was eligible to invest in the stock of companies that were being restructured by Bain. Romney and other Bain investors usually were able to purchase the stock at very low prices.

Through the years, such stock may appreciate in value, sometimes considerably.

The analysts said that if Romney and others at Bain got a stock cheap and eventually donated it to a church or charity without cashing in the stock, then they could get two tax benefits.

First, they would not have to pay capital gains tax on the appreciated value of the stock, which they would have to do if they sold the stock and either pocketed or donated the proceeds.

Second, they might be able to deduct all, or at least part of, the value of the donated stock from their taxable income.

Such a move can save wealthy donors millions of dollars, the analysts said.

"Ordinarily when you dispose of something that has appreciated in value you have a taxable gain on which you pay tax," said Robert Willens, a Wall Street tax specialist. "This is one of the most prominent situations where you can dispose of appreciated property and avoid paying tax on the gain."

Another tax specialist, Michael J. Cooney of the Nixon Peabody law firm, said that such arrangements have become "pretty common."

"The great American invention in charitable giving, which is slowly catching on in the rest of the world, is the concept of giving appreciated property, commonly soon-to-be-publicly traded stock, to charity," Cooney said.

TITHING TO THE CHURCH

The SEC filings show shares in Bain deals being given to Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A spokesman for the Mormon church said the corporation is the entity to which Mormons commonly donate tithed funds and assets for the church's use.

Spokesmen for Romney's campaign and the Mormon church said Romney was not the only Mormon who worked at Bain and who donated appreciated stock to the church.

"Not all the shares you see (in SEC filings) can be attributed to Mitt, as there are other Mormon members of the firm who may also have been making donations to the church of personal shares owned by them," said Eric Fehrnstrom, a top aide to Romney.

Fehrnstrom said some of Romney's donations to the church went through the Tyler Charitable Foundation, a Romney family charity that has donated millions of dollars to the church during the past five years.

Other contributions to the church, Fehrnstrom said, have been "donations of stock through Bain."

"These are personal donations, not payments from Bain," said Fehrnstrom, who said Romney "regularly tithes to his church."

A TAX STRATEGY

A stock donation to the Mormon Church during the 1990s - when Romney was in charge at Bain Capital - shows how the donor might have booked significant tax savings.

In the transaction, the church received 93,668 shares of Wesley Jessen VisionCare Inc, a contact lens company.

The church sold the shares for $22.325 each, after an underwriting commission, according to a Wesley Jessen prospectus dated August 19, 1997. The shares had appreciated more than 50-fold since being acquired by Bain Capital Funds two years earlier at a cost of 43.4 cents a share, according to data in a Wesley Jessen prospectus filed with the SEC on February 13, 1997.

If Romney or another Bain partner or employee had cashed in the shares, they would have been taxed on the $21.89 per share gain, or $2.05 million.

Instead, the donor of the shares to the Mormon church avoided tax on the substantial capital gain and would have been able to count some or all of the $2.09 million of stock given to the church as a tax-deductible charitable contribution.

BBC Show Stargazing Live Leads To Exoplanet Discovery

I thought that the names had to be approved by the IAU or something. (The summary says the planet found "now bears their name". Unless the IAU decided to name it after them I suspect they got to name it). Is the summary wrong?

On the other hand, if the summary is correct, the chance for OFFICIALLY naming an entire world would be worth something! Who knows, maybe the exo-planet you named after yourself (or your firstborn, or your pet dog) could one day be determined to have life, maybe intelligent life! (Or maybe it'll just have cool double-sun sunsets or pretty rings).

Couldn't NASA get a bit of funding from people who wanted to bid on the rights to name a world? (Unlike copyrights, aren't celestial bodies named FOREVER?).

Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case uses self-healing paint, won't un-crack your screen

Well hey there, butterfingers. Do your smartphone cases often slip from grip, hitting the deck and resulting in a bevy of tiny nicks that leave you self-conscious about your inability to maintain a firm grasp? Well, Nissan (yes, that Nissan) may just have an answer, in the form of a self-healing iPhone case. Naturally, the Scratch Shield protects your device from garnering unwanted blemishes, but it also features a polyrotaxane-based finish that helps maintain the case itself, covering over small scratches in as little as an hour. Nissan is keeping its magic paint on home turf for the time being, licensing the material to Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, though the Leaf-maker is also said to be considering a commercial launch later this year. Until then, you'll need to stay strong (gripped), though a self-mend solution may well be in your future.

The environmentally compatible cement Celitement developed by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is granted the 2011 German Innovation Award for Climate and the Environment (IKU). Today, Celitement GmbH founded by KIT, the four inventors, and SCHWENK Zement KG received the award in the category of Product and Service Innovations at Berlin. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety and the Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e. V. (Federation of German Industries) grant this award for outstanding innovations in climate and environmental protection. The award is endowed with EUR 25,000.

"The German Innovation Award again reflects the high potential of this development made by KIT. With Celitement, we want to contribute to climate protection in the building sector," said Dr. Peter Fritz, KIT Vice President for Research and Innovation.

"We will remain fit for the future, if we learn to combine economic growth with environmental protection and low consumption of resources. The ideas of the laureates are evidence of the compatibility of economy and ecology," said the Federal Minister for the Environment, Dr. Nobert Rttgen, in Berlin.

Cement holds together all concrete buildings. Every year, cement works produce nearly three billion tons of the binder. During production, they also emit three billion tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide annually. These emissions exceed those of global air traffic by a factor of three to four. Cement production has a share of about five to seven percent in worldwide carbon dioxide emissions. Compared to conventional cement production processes, Celitement promises an enormous reduction of energy consumption. Presumably, carbon dioxide emissions will be halved. Moreover, the new cement is characterized by a low consumption of resources. Compared to conventional Portland cement, only one third of the amount of limestone is required and it can be done completely without a gypsum additive. "This is achieved by a novel production process, in the main stage of which temperatures of about 200C are needed only. Conventional cement clinker requires 1450C," emphasized Dr. Hanns-Gnther Mayer and Dr. Peter Stemmermann, who accepted the award for Celitement GmbH.

The jury chaired by Professor Klaus Tpfer selected the four IKU 2011 laureates from among 76 applications this year. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Reactor Safety and the Federation of German Industries (BDI) granted the award for the third time.
