Letter: Oil Drilling Off Virginia?

To the Editor:

Re ?Virginia Tries to Circumvent Obama to Allow Energy Drilling? (Business Day, Nov. 14):

It?s no surprise that oil companies want to drill off the coast of Virginia. Where don?t they want to drill?

What is shocking is that mainstream politicians want to let them, despite the fact that both environmentalists and the United States Navy (not typical bedfellows) are extremely uncomfortable with it.

The New York metropolitan area should be uncomfortable, too. The worst-case scenario from this is oil, and oiled marine life, washing up on the shores of Liberty Island. The best-case scenario is further acceleration of climate change, which may have at least partly fueled Hurricane Sandy?s unprecedented storm surge.

It?s time to move beyond petroleum and to develop a sensible national energy plan for the future.
