MONROE, N.C. -- The?Monroe Police Department and FBI are assisting the Union County Sheriff's Office in an investigation into a cyberattack on the school district's server.?

NBC Charlotte obtained emails sent by Superintendent Mary Ellis to all teachers Thursday.

It stated the district immediately disconnected the servers after detecting it had been breached.

It also warned the personal information, like social security numbers,?of the more than 5000 employees may have been stolen.

The school system does not believe student or parent information was compromised.? It is continuing to work with investigators to determine who did this and how to prevent it from happening in the future.

Additional information is expected to be released to employees as it becomes available.
